Support for Newmarket Sports Council: As a volunteer community leader in the sports and ...: "As a volunteer community leader in the sports and recreation industry, most recently with the Newmarket Soccer Club as President (volunteer)..."
As a volunteer community leader in the sports and recreation industry, most recently with the Newmarket Soccer Club as President (volunteer) for the past 5 years, it has become apparent that our not-for-profit sports group need to come together as one voice.

According to a recent article in the Era Banner of today's date: http://www.yorkregion.com/opinion/columns/article/887451--sport-aurora-gives-voice-to-sport-minded-electors
all municipalities should have a sports council to advocate for all sports.

This is not a new concept, and through my research have spoken with members who were part of the previous sports council which disbanded in 2004 for various reasons.  Soccer did not participate at that time.  I have spoken with Presidents from other not-for-profit sports groups in Newmarket and all are in agreement that this entity is in high demand.

What a Newmarket Sports Council can accomplish:

  • Develop opportunities for networking, mentoring and leadership development in the sport and recreation community.
  • Build, maintain, share and celebrate a strong volunteer base.
  • Provide leadership and a voice for collective sports and recreation activities
  • Sharing of information and expertise in relation to fundraising (i.e. grants, lotteries, etc.)
  • Support for bids for national, provincial and international competitions.
  • Support for non-competitive recreation activities for children and adults
  • Support for facility rentals, improvements and new construction
  • Increase physical activity in our community for children and adults
  • Althetic recognition through the media, schools, etc.
  • A Newmarket Sports Council will work for the common good for all within the framework of honesty, respect, and transparency. Newmarket is currently one of the largest communities that do not have a sports council, and are lagging behind municipalities such as Oakville, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Toronto (which has 6 active sports councils). With obesity rates at their highest levels in 10 years in both children and adults, we must keep our residents involved in sports and recreation. Please help make this platform a reality in Newmarket with a candidate that has a proven record for affecting change in our community.  Vote Lucille Abate, Councillor, Ward 6 on October 25th 2010!  By your support, we CAN make a difference for our families through sport and recreation in Newmarket!
